The Etnean Flora

The presence of vegetation testifies to us that, despite the many lava flows, nature is able to regenerate and create new life. This, moreover, has truly unique and surreal landscape, characterized by a black desert with thick green vegetation.
The vegetation of Etna is very varied and diversified both vertically (depending on the altitude) and horizontally (from side to side).

To discover the vegetation of Etna we can ideally divide the volcano into three sections, one from 1000 m to 1500 m of height and one that goes from 1500 m to 2400 m.

The first imaginary section, technically called basal Mediterranean plane, is the most influenced by the presence of man, who has exploited these fertile lands for the cultivation of citrus fruits, grapes, olives, almonds, pistachios and various fruit trees, whose unmistakable flavours have made Sicily famous throughout Europe and the world. Driving up to the volcano, especially in June and July, you will also have the opportunity to admire, both on the roadsides and along the nature trails, the broom of the Etna, a leguminous plant that often may exceed 8 meters in height and whose characteristic yellow colour creates a wonderful contrast on the intense black of the lava stone. If you joins our tours, always led by our expert and passionate naturalistic guides, you will have not only the chance to admire this plant, which grows only on volcanic ground, but also to learn more about its properties and diffusion.

The second section covers between 1000 and 1500 meters of altitude. The vegetation is characterized by forests, mainly formed by larch pine, Etna birch, beech, poplars and chestnut trees. Below this rich vegetation is the ideal space for a varied undergrowth, that you can discover together with our guides during the Goodmorning Etna and Etna, Vino & Alcantara tours, which take place on the green northern side of our volcano.

The summit area of Etna, that goes from 1500 to 2400 meters, is characterised by a vegetation, made of juniper, broom, turbot and senecium, which is particularly resistant both to the high winter temperatures and to the strong summer dryness and also able to grow on a volcanic ground. This altitude, and even more, is reachable with our Top Easy Tour!
