The Alcantara Gorges

The Alcantara Gorges are one of the most wonderful and famous places in Sicily: the Alcantara river carved canyons through the basaltic rock. The name of the river has arabian origins and comes from an ancient bridge that spanned over it (“Al qantarah” means in fact “the bridge”).
The Alcantara river passes through various villages that make up the River Park of the Alcantara. The nearest to the coast is Giardini Naxos, followed by Taormina, Calatabiano, Gaggi, Graniti and Motta Camastra.

In particular, in the territory of Motta Camastra, there is the most famous and massive canyon of the Alcantara, which is 6 km long and is easily walkable for 3 km. The characteristic feature of this canyon is the structure of the walls: the canyon was formed from the encounter between lava flows and the cold water of the river that cooled it very quickly which, by cooling them quickly, gave rise to rocky walls with deep irregular fractures of various configurations.

On the sides of the river, there are also a small beaches, where you can relax or sunbathe in summer. The bravest ones dip their bare feet in the river and walk up to the gorge but, as the water reaches 8 degrees, it is advisable to wear a wetsuit if you want to take a longer route.

In this regard, a legend tells that the transformation of the water of the river from hot to cold was due to an act of revenge by the god Vulcan, who was rejected by Venus, who loved bathing in those waters.
